Carousel Ballroom, San Francisco: February 14, 1968

A great early “hometown” show from Valentine’s Day, 1968. This is one of the first shows that featured a lot of “new at the time” songs from the Grateful Dead’s formative years. This is one of the truly legendary shows, rumored to be a favorite of Phil Lesh, and released a couple years ago commercially as part of the Road Trips series.. Check out early versions of “China Cat Sunflower,” “Dark Star,” “Cryptical Envelopment,” and other originals, along with staples from the Pigpen years like “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl,” “Morning Dew,” and “In the Midnight Hour.”

In the January 30th episode of The Dead Zone, we look at the opening set from the show, but we recommend checking out the whole shebang, cause it’s all amazing.
